How Does a Laser Measure Work?
A laser measure uses laser technology to determine the distance between two points. They work by sending pulses of laser light to a solid surface, and the time it takes for the pulses to return is used to calculate the distance. The accuracy of laser measures can be as low as ±1 mm, which is very impressive.
Pros and Cons of Laser Measures
Laser measures are a great tool, but they have their pros and cons. Luckily, the pros far outweigh the cons!
Pros
- Compact and lightweight
- Measurements are quick
- High level of accuracy
- Metric and imperial measurements
- Area and volume calculations
Cons
- Bright sunlight can interfere with the laser
- Require batteries
atolla T201 Laser Measure 60m
- Area, volume and indirect measurements
- Metric and imperial units
- Store up to 20 data records
- Backlit LCD display
- IP54 rated case
- 2 bubble levels
- Mute button
- No protective case or pouch bag
Includes
The atolla T201 offers a measuring range of 60 m, which is the largest of all the laser measures on our list. It has a durable plastic case with an IP54 rating, which means it’s dust and splash-proof. The back-lit LCD display is bright and easy to read, while the horizontal and vertical bubble levels are a handy feature that helps to ensure more precise measurements. In terms of functionality, you can easily switch between different units of measurement, calculate areas and volumes, and add and subtract measurements. You can also save up to twenty sets of data to the built-in memory.
The only negative we have is that the button design and layout could be better, especially when you compare it to the other laser measures on our list. The history button in the middle is a bit on the small side, and the use of red text on black buttons isn’t the best for readability. Despite this, the atolla T201 is still a good laser measure that’s easy-to-use and very good value for money.

- Area, volume and indirect measurements
- Metric and imperial units
- Store up to 20 data records
- Backlit LCD display
- IP54 rated case
- Mute button
Includes
The DTAPE DT50 is a compact and lightweight laser meter with a maximum range of 50 m/165 ft and an accuracy of ±2mm. Apart from the ability to measure distance continuously, you can use the DT50 to calculate area and volume. You can even measure things indirectly where it’s not convenient and save up to 20 measurements to its built-in memory. There are four units of measurement (m/in/ft/ft+in) that you can switch between simply by pressing a button, and the 2-inch back-lit screen does a good job of displaying everything clearly. Finally, the DT50 has a soft rubber case to protect it from bumps and, thanks to the IP54 rating, you can use it on construction sites without having to worry about dust or splashes of water damaging it.
Overall, the DTAPE DT50 is a solid and well-designed laser measure that has a useful range of features. It does lack the bubble levels we saw on the atolla or an electronic angle sensor found on other devices, but if you can live without these, the DTAPE is a worthwhile purchase.

- Metric and imperial units
- Electronic angle sensor
- Store up to 99 data records
- Backlit LCD display
- IP54 rated case

They claim the lithium-ion battery included can perform 8,000 measurements on a full charge, which should keep you going for a long time.
The TSW-D50EU has a measuring range of 50 m and a real-time electronic angle sensor like the Meterk. Another impressive feature is its ability to store 99 data records, which is significantly more than its nearest rival. The shockproof case is durable and the IP54 rating makes it suitable for dusty environments. The TSW-D50EU has some stand out features that push it ahead of the competition, including a 28-month warranty.
